It’s the 21st century, and everything is digital, that is, online. In your business, you have digital assets that maybe you haven’t thought about. These assets, like all your business assets, are valuable and should be protected.
What Are Digital Assets?
Digital assets are assets that exist online. Some of your digital assets might exist on your own servers or they may be “in the cloud.” Digital assets include:
- Photos
- Websites or Blogs
- Business Documents
- Apps
- Emails
- Social Media Accounts
Did you know that a person has an average of 40 password-protected accounts?
To make things more challenging, 71% of people memorize their passwords instead of recording them somewhere?
So what happens to your password-protected accounts when you die?
Without your passwords, your family members will be unable to do things like close down social media accounts or protect your personal correspondence.
There are 2 things you can do right now to safeguard your digital estate.
1 – Take an inventory of all of your digital assets including email accounts, social media accounts, cloud storage, etc. Decide what you would want to happen with these if you were no longer here and record or share that information with someone you trust.
2 – make a list of your password and keep it in 1 location. There are digital platforms, like Last Pass that will store this information for you, or you could write it down and lock it in your safe.
We live in a digital world, and when it comes time to leave it, make sure your digital assets are taken care of.
